Article sections
Anyone at HAMK can create a new team in Microsoft Teams. Once creating a team, it should be named with logic and thought. It is also good idea, that one team have more than one owner. It is possible to create different types of teams and the types are described in the table below. Staff members can choose the template for the teams from the following criteria:
Class | PLC | Staff | Other | |
Group | Teachers and students working together on assignments and projects. | Members of teaching team work on materials together, e.g. for a specific module. | Staff works together on a unit, team or subject. This team applies best for developing project or a specific function. | Staff and students work together around a free subject, e.g., exercising. |
Access | The teacher owns this team and adds students to it. The teacher moderates discussions and can decide, who can discuss on which discussion area. Students have publishing rights in the team. | All module’s teachers (team members) have equal reading and writing rights. | The creator of the team is the owner and administrator, who invites other members of the staff. Other team members have editing rights, according to the settings made by the owner. | The student or member of the staff can create a team and invite members. All members have same read and write rights by default, unless owner makes changes to the rights. |
Characteristics | This team type is best suited for teaching purposes. Characteristics include, i.e., giving and evaluating assignments group working, possibility to guide students with video connections, etc. | Teachers can share materials to students, by using, e.g., an URL-address requiring HAMK network ID. When students and shared material in Teams, the other teachers in the module may use this material according to the team teacher principles. The team cooperates in the PLC environment by sharing the activities with other colleagues, organizing meetings in online meetings, having discussions around different subjects, working in breakout OneNote PLC Notebook program’s preinstalled templates for research and development work, manage tasks by bringing Planner as a part of the team, adding Twitter tweets around a subject, etc. |
Team can share contents to each other, discuss, have online meetings, keep a memo, work in smaller teams, manage tasks by using Planner, etc. | Team can share contents to each other, discuss, have online meetings, keep a memo, work in smaller teams, manage tasks by using Planner, etc. |
The most used team type is Other, because along with it comes no ready OneNote or other document templates, but team owners have free hands to decide which characteristics they want to use, and in which order.
The team types mentioned above are only for the staff members. When a student creates a team, Teams creates automatically a default type team.

Team deletion
The Teams team will be deleted by the IT-services if the group doesn’t have any owner or members. During deletion, all team files, memos, messages, Planner plans, etc., will be deleted, including SharePoint files. If some files need to be stored after the team deletion, it’s a good idea to save them, for example, on OneDrive or computer hard disk (long-term storage).
If some team is not needed, team owners can delete the team with the function Delete the team. The function can be found from the same line with the team name, under the “three dots”.
